Introduction

The goal of “ Diploma in child health [ DCH (NBE)]” 2 years course in pediatrics is to produce a competent pediatrician who:

Recognize the health needs of infants, children and adolescents and carries our professional obligations in neonates keeping with principles of National Health Policy and professional ethics
Is specially oriented towards providing optimal child health services at the primary level and has acquired the competencies pertaining to pediatrics that are required to be practiced in the community and at non-teaching pediatric hospital settings.
Has acquired skills in effectively communicating with the child, family and the community
Is aware of contemporary advances and developments in medical sciences as related to child health
Has acquired skills in educating medical and paramedical professionals

Eligibility Diploma Course:

To get admitted to a DNB (Diplomate of National Board) – Diploma course, candidates need to have an MBBS degree from a recognized institution and have completed a one-year internship. They must also qualify for the NEET-PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post-Graduation) examination.

Admission is based on merit, determined by the NEET-PG score, and is followed by a centralized counseling process conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).

MBBS Degree: Candidates must possess a valid MBBS degree from a medical college recognized by the Medical Council of India (now part of the National Medical Commission).
Internship: Completion of the mandatory one-year internship is required.
Registration: You need a permanent or provisional registration certificate of MBBS qualification from the NMC or a State Medical Council.
NEET-PG Qualification: Candidates need to qualify for the NEET-PG examination conducted by the NBEMS.

Admission Process:

NEET-PG / PDCET: The first step is to appear for the NEET-PG / PDCET exam.
Centralized Counseling: NBEMS conducts a centralized counseling process based on merit (NEET-PG scores / PDCET Scores).
Choice Filling: Candidates indicate their preferred institutions/hospitals during the counseling process.
Seat Allocation: Seats are allocated based on merit and choices submitted by candidates.
Reporting: Selected candidates need to report to the allotted institution and complete the admission formalities.
Registration: Upon admission, candidates are registered with the NBEMS as DNB / Diploma trainees.

🎓 DCH in Pediatrics – Learning Outcomes
(1) Cognitive Domain
Recognize the key importance of child health in the context of the health priorities of the country. Practice the specialty of Pediatrics in keeping with the principles of professional ethics. Identify social, economic, environmental, biological and emotional determinants of fetal, neonatal child and adolescent health, rehabilitative, preventive and promotive measures to provide holistic care to children. Recognize the importance of growth and development as the foundation of Pediatrics and help each child realize her/his optimal potential in this regard. Take detailed history perform full physical examination including neuro development and behavioral assessment and behavioral assessment and anthropometric measurements of the child and make clinical diagnosis. Plan relevant, cost-effective investigative and therapeutic procedures in confirming the possible diagnosis and excluding the other differential diagnosis. Interpret important imaging and laboratory results. Diagnose illness in children based on the analysis of history, physical examination and investigative work up. Plan and deliver comprehensive treatment for illness in children using principles of rational drug therapy. Manage childhood emergencies efficiently. Plan and advise measures for the prevention of childhood disease and disability. Plan rehabilitation of children suffering from chronic illness and handicap and those with special needs. Provide comprehensive care to normal, ‘at risk’ and sick neonates. Recognize emotional and behavioral characteristics of children while dealing with them. Understands and demonstrate empathy and humane approach towards patients and their families and respect their sensibilities. Has knowledge about communication skills in explaining management and prognosis, providing counseling and giving health education messages to patients, families and communities. Understands the importance of a self-directed learner, recognize continuing educational needs; use appropriate learning resources, and critically analyze relevant published literature in order to practice evidence-based pediatrics. Play the assigned role in the implementation of national health programs, effectively and responsibly. Organize and supervise the desired managerial and leadership skills. Has requisite knowledge about medico legal registration according to prevailing laws of the country/state. Functions as a productive member of a team engaged in health care, especially in community pediatrics settings. Understands and requisite knowledge about the importance of environmental health related to child health. To document, collect and send health related information as required by government and other health agencies and help them effectively formulation of health policies pertaining to child health. Has requisite knowledge to investigate diagnose and manage emerging infections as per national guidelines (e.g. Covid-19). Recall and follow appropriate infection control precautions relevant to the situation.
(2) Affective Domain
Should be able to function as a part of a team, develop an attitude of cooperation with colleagues, and interact with the patient and the clinician or other colleagues to provide the best possible diagnosis or opinion. Always adopt ethical principles and maintain proper etiquette in dealings with patients, relatives and other health personnel and to respect the rights of the patient including the right to information and second opinion. Develop communication skills to word reports and professional opinion as well as to interact with patients, relatives, peers and paramedical staff, and for effective teaching.
(3) Psychomotor Domain
Professional and research ethics Appropriate relation with pharmaceutical industry Communication and relationship with colleagues, nurses and paramedical workers. Counseling adolescents on the common health concerns and issues prevalent in this age group Counseling parents on IYCF including breastfeeding, Nutrition in older children and adolescents, immunization, disease prevention, promoting healthy lifestyle. Communicating with parents/child about nature of illness and management plan prognostication, breaking bad news.

History and Examination Proficiency in eliciting, processing and systemically presenting pediatrics history and examination with due emphasis of the important facts. Recognition and demonstration of physical findings Recording of height, weight, head circumference and mid arm circumference and interpretation of these parameters using growth reference standard assessment of nutritional status and growth. Assessment of pubertal growth (SMR) Complete development assessment by history and physical examination, and recognizing development disabilities, including autism. (A) Monitoring Skills
Non-invasive monitoring of blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rates, saturation and other case-based parameters (abdominal girth, input output charting etc.) Venous, capillary and arterial blood sampling using appropriate precautions including arterial and venous blood gases. (D) Academic Skills
Demonstrate skills in documentation of case details, and of morbidity and mortality data relevant to the assigned situation and in place of work Familiarity with basic IT skills.
